Yankees move RHP Gerrit Cole (elbow) to 60-day IL

Any dreams of a speedy return to the mound for reigning American League Cy Young Award winner Gerrit Cole were dashed Thursday when the New York Yankees moved the right-hander to the 60-day injured list due to elbow inflammation. On March 16, Cole said he wouldn't throw for three to four weeks in an effort to heal his ailing throwing elbow, telling reporters that nerve irritation and edema were the source of his problem, with rest and recovery the prescription. The Yankees finalized their Opening Day roster Thursday morning, also moving right-handers Tommy Kahnle (right shoulder inflammation) and McKinley Moore (right knee bursitis) to the 15-day injured list and infielders DJ LeMahieu (right foot contusion) and Oswald Peraza (right shoulder strain) to the 10-day list. All four m…

West Virginia seeks top form vs. Oklahoma State

Neither West Virginia nor Oklahoma State are off to desired starts in Big 12 play. With both teams in the conference basement, Saturday's meeting between the teams at Stillwater, Okla., presents an opportunity to move in a positive direction. For Oklahoma State (8-11, 0-6 Big 12) the pressure is mounting. The Cowboys appeared to be on the way to their first conference win Tuesday, leading TCU by 17 points in the first half. However, an almost nine-minute stretch without a field goal bridging the first and second halves doomed Oklahoma State, as it fell 74-69 to extend its losing streak to six games. "We have got to be more consistent throughout the game," Oklahoma State coach Mike Boynton said. "When we get late in games and the jump shot is letting us down, we hav…

Immigrants Past, Present, And Future On One Minneapolis Street

About a mile south from U.S. Bank Stadium, in a midtown Minneapolis building-turned-market called Mercado Central, the only visible reminder that a big sports game is happening in the city this weekend is a sign of protest. On a message board dressed with community announcements and plumber suggestions, a pink sheet of paper with a picture of Colin Kaepernick and Eric Reid kneeling invites passerby to an anti-racist, anti-corporate rally. It is scheduled to start two and a half hours before Super Bowl XLII. Mercado’s message board | David Roth Sports flyer | David Roth A few steps away, a display lights a wall of strawberry, vanilla, and chocolate conchas. The case of baked goods faces what is an almost life-sized nativity scene, even though it’s already February. Conchas in the Me…

Would the Patriots Really Roll the Dice With Jarrett Stidham Succeeding Tom Brady?

data-mm-id=”_mgdlpjhaw”>The list of backup quarterbacks to Tom Brady is long and relatively distinguished, but perhaps none of them have been as close to succeeding the legendary Patriots quarterback than Jarrett Stidham is right now. With Brady entering free agency and speculation circling like never before that he'll actually leave New England, there's a legit chance the Patriots are looking for a new starting quarterback for the first time since 2001. Many pundits have connected them with the bevy of other free agent QBs this offseason, including Ryan Tannehill and Jameis Winston. But on Good Morning Football, Peter Schrager speculated that he thinks the Patriots will actually go with Stidham as the starter, draft a QB in the first round and see how things pan out. The @Pa…

Bob Myers: No Joy in Warriors 2018 Championship Run

data-mm-id=”_0zrbmaanx”>One of the points The Last Dance has really hammered home for basketball fans is how hard it is to win championships in consecutive seasons. Playing at least 98 games two or three years in a row, and being rewarded with only three and a half months to recover, takes an immense physical toll. There's the mental weight of being defending championships, dealing with the expectations and the fact that the team has a target on its back every night they take the floor. Then there's the issues that naturally arise with teammates, who are people as well as basketball players. Most people don't get along with their coworkers all the time, much less if they have to work with the same two dozen people, day in and day out, for years at a time– and most peopl…

Rams and Chargers Will Be On 'Hard Knocks' This Year

data-mm-id=”_hii52or09″>The 2019 edition of HBO's Hard Knocks was a big letdown. Despite the insanity that was the Oakland Raiders' summer with Antonio Brown, the footage put out to the public just wasn't very entertaining. In general, Hard Knocks has fallen off a bit in entertainment quality over the last few seasons. HBO is trying something different in 2020. The network and the NFL announced on Thursday this year's version would be the first to feature two teams — the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers. This year, #HardKnocks heads to Los Angeles.
